Mon River Drowning Victim Identified

DONORA (KDKA) ― Authorities have identified the boy who drowned yesterday in the Monongahela River.

Terrance Carlock, 12, of Donora, slipped under the waters of the Monongahela River Sunday near a boat club in Webster, Westmoreland County.

Witnesses said a group of kids could be seen playing on the shore near the Webster Boat Club when one swam out too far, and then slipped beneath the surface.

Witnesses say a boater tried to help the boy until divers could get to the scene.

"There was a man down there, pulling in his boat and saw the kid in distress and tried to go out and help him," said Ray Haney, a neighbor. "By the time he got to him, he went under, and, I swear, the diver, he was here in a matter of five minutes."

Officials say the dive team was able to get to the scene quickly because they were conducting a training session nearby.

"We were fortunate enough to have witnesses that saw the young man in the water, in trouble, and they were able to direct the diver to that spot," said Bruce Smith, of the dive team. "I understand from him [a witness] that our diver was underwater 11 minutes and recovered the young man within 11 minutes of entering the water."

Carlock was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 7:35 p.m.

A memorial fund has been set up for Terrance Carlock at the James Rabe Funeral Home.

The funeral home's address is 701 Thompson Avenue, Donora, Pa., 15033.

The phone number at the funeral home is 724-379-9020.
