Drink Tax Scofflaws Could Lose Liquor Licenses
PITTSBURGH (AP) ―
More than 40 bars and restaurants are behind on their payments of Allegheny County's new 10-percent drink tax and could lose their liquor licenses if they don't pay up soon.
County treasurer John Weinstein says the county is owed more than $500,000, though the law prevents him from saying how much any particular business owes.
Still, Weinstein has
posted the names of delinquent taxpayers online.
Seven businesses did not pay any money through August, even though they started collecting the tax in January.
Some say business has been slow but they're planning to pay up when the busy season kicks in this fall.
But county bars and restaurants estimate the tax has cost them $70 million in sales this year.
