Drink Tax Cut Approved By County Council

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Allegheny County drink tax will be taking a cut next year.

On Tuesday, Allegheny County Council approved reducing the tax from 10 percent to 7 percent as part of the 2009 operating budget.

Officials estimate that in 2008 the drink tax raised between $10 million to $20 million more than needed.

The new rate is expected to produce revenues for things like infrastructure.

However, angry bar and restaurant owners, who are still fighting the tax in court, say the reduction still isn't enough and the tax has devastated their business.

But they say that they will pass the tax cut on to their customers.

The budget will increase fees for parks and recreation in the county, but it holds the line on property taxes for the eighth year in a row.
