Allegheny Co. Mulling Its Own Drink Tax Referendum

PITTSBURGH (AP) ― Allegheny County Council may try to put its own drink tax referendum on the November ballot.

But council must first answer this question at a special meeting Tuesday: Does council have the power to put its own referendum on the ballot?

Council wants to give voters a choice to keep the 10 percent drink tax or choose to increase their property taxes instead.

Bar and restaurant owners don't like the tax and are gathering signatures in hopes of giving voters a referendum to reject the tax in November.

County Executive Dan Onorato insists the drink tax is necessary to fund county transit without raising property taxes.
