Truck Drivers Stage Protest About High Gas Prices
SMITHTON (KDKA) ―
Gas prices are on the rise again, but with diesel fuel costing more than $4 a gallon truckers are now issuing a warning by staging a protest today.
Some truck drivers say they are at a financial breaking point due to diesel prices and it could soon stall the economy.
"It went up, what, 30 cents a gallon in a matter of what two or three weeks," said truck driver, Harry Powell. "That's just crazy."
For instance, diesel costs at the Flying J Service Center in Smithton, Westmoreland County, have now reached $4.26 a gallon.
And drivers say many owner/operator truckers are being forced to stop driving.
So one truck driver, from Vandergrift, says he has now organized a one-day protest today against the high diesel prices.
Drivers are being asked to leave their trucks in park for 24 hours in a show of solidarity.
One veteran driver told KDKA the United States economy by early summer could be crippled due to the high cost of diesel.
"It will, and the person that doesn't realize that they're living in a fantasy world. It will. That's exactly, that's the best word you can use," said Kenny Meyers, of Harrisonburg, Va. "I look for a considerable reduction in the next 90 days. I really do."
