PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
A major construction project continues in Oakland and in just a few weeks, drivers will be feeling a major traffic pinch.
PennDOT will take down the Boulevard of the Allies Bridge which means thousands of vehicles will have to find a new way around.
The bridge has been in a sad state for many years.
"Anybody who travels into Oakland knows the Boulevard of the Allies Bridge is in dire need of replacement, and we're very happy to be able to deliver that replacement," said PennDOT's
Jim Struzzi.
Work to replace the bridge began this spring with the construction of a new ramp from Fifth Avenue onto the Boulevard.
However, some drivers may not know the whole bridge will be closed beginning January 3rd though the fall of 2008.
"So what you're going to see is a brand new structure, two slip ramps so you don't have those ramps that went around, basically you're going to have just ramps that come off the boulevard," said Struzzi. "So, it's going to be a vast improvement both aesthetically and structurally for the bridge, a new bridge and a new look for Oakland."
PennDOT will take up concerns about the project at a public hearing on Wednesday on the Pitt campus.
Detours will be posted.
