Cyber Teacher May Have Helped Save Student

FRAZER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― The actions of a local teacher may have helped save her student who was 250 miles away.

Rae Balog, 28, teaches Spanish at the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School in Frazer Township at the Pittsburgh Mills Mall.

About 120 cyber school students across the state are enrolled in her class, including 16-year-old Ariel Rivera who lives in Reading and happened to be home alone at 7:16 a.m. Wednesday.

She sent Balog a message that two people broke into her house and asked for help. She also gave Balog her address.

According to Reading Police, no one ever got inside the house, but Ariel says two men ransacked her family's home, taking clothing and electronics.

She told her teacher she could not get to a phone, only her computer and that she was locked in her room.

Balog called 911 and an Allegheny County dispatcher contacted authorities in Reading.

Balog says she has since spoken with Ariel's father who says things are fine now but his daughter is still somewhat shaken up.
