Suspect Crashes Into City Police Cruiser

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A car theft suspect is in a Pittsburgh hospital after hitting a city police cruiser head-on while attempting to elude authorities overnight.

The 19-year-old suspect is in serious condition at Mercy Hospital after the crash near 18th Street on Pittsburgh's South Side.

The Pittsburgh police officer was treated and released for a hand injury.

Police say the chase began in Baldwin when police spotted the stolen car and attempted to pull the driver over.

Police say the driver fled, leading police through Brentwood, Mount Oliver and into the city, where a local officer prepared to join the pursuit.

Instead, the suspect crashed into the Pittsburgh police cruiser, bringing an immediate halt to the chase.

The suspect was knocked unconscious in the crash.
