Husband Charged In Corrections Officer's Death

CUMBERLAND TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― A man is in police custody today after his wife was found dead inside her mobile home in Greene County on Friday.

Investigators say the body of 30-year-old Melissa Ann Baker was found on the living room floor of the mobile home on Crucible Road in Cumberland Township.

She reportedly had a slash wound to her neck.

Police say her husband, Scott Baker, 37, of Nemacolin, is facing a criminal homicide charge in her death. They were in the process of a divorce.

Baker was a corrections officer at the Greene County Jail and a mother.

Her father says he has been fearful of his daughter's safety.

"My daughter had put a protection from abuse order against this man," said Michael Spudich, Baker's father. "And tragically she dropped the order at the father's prompt."

Police say they believe the killing occurred while Scott Baker's sons, a 12-year-old and an 18-month-old, were inside the mobile home.

Police reports quote the 12-year-old as saying, "Scott was on top of her," and the boy reportedly went on to say that he "thought Scott was smothering her."

"A lot of women that go through this have for whatever reason an allegiance to their spouse and they make the mistake of dropping these orders," said Spudich.

Meanwhile, at Greene County Jail where the victim worked, they are trying to cope with the stunning news.

"I was devastated yesterday when I got the phone call that they had found Officer Baker and she was deceased," said Warden Harry Gillispie. "She's a very good officer; she's been with us a little over a year."

Scott Baker is being held in the Washington County Jail without bond. As a precaution, he was transferred out of the Greene County Jail.
