Judge Says Woman In Baby Snatching Case Competent

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― The suburban Pittsburgh woman accused of cutting an infant from a slain woman's womb last week has been found mentally competent by a judge to assist in her defense.

Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning said at a competency hearing today for 38 year-old Andrea-Curry Demus that a preliminary hearing in her case can proceed.

Dr. Christine Martone from the Allegheny County Behavioral Clinic testified that Curry-Demus suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and hallucinations.

She also described her as incoherent, psychotic, uncooperative, and a danger to herself.

Nonetheless, she will have her hearing tomorrow.

Curry-Demus, of Wilkinsburg, is charged with homicide, kidnapping and related offenses in the death of 18-year-old Kia Johnson, of McKeesport.

Authorities say Curry-Demus tried to pass off Johnson's newborn son as her own.
