Student Awarded Full Scholarship To Local College

CHARLEROI (KDKA) ― A local student got some very good news when a "prize patrol" showed up at her high school today.

In Jennifer Tharp's four years at Charleroi Area High School in Washington County she has been a very active student in school and the community.

More than 240 students competed for the Wimmer National Scholarship. This morning, Tharp found out that she had the top score.

Saint Vincent College officials interrupted one of her classes to tell her. She gets full tuition, room and board in a four-year scholarship worth about $145,000.

"I was hoping on the off chance for maybe the top four, but not the top one," said Tharp.

She says there is a very good chance she will go to Saint Vincent College because of the scholarship.

Tharp got the top award for her test performance, but four other area students performed very well too.

Olivia Dongilla, a senior at Hempfield Area Senior High School; Joseph Gray of Hopedale, Ohio; Caylie Hake, a senior at Hempfield Area Senior High School; and Michael Kaufman, a senior at Upper Saint Clair High School are each getting $100,000 for tuition.

Tharp has performed well on her SATs, has done excellent in school and has an idea of what she wants to do. She has decided to major in either chemistry or English, but says her true passion is to become an attorney.

She says if she decides to go to Saint Vincent College, the money the family has raised for tuition may go toward law school.

The Wimmer Scholarship program is named in honor of Archabbot Boniface Wimmer who founded Saint Vincent College in 1846 as the first Benedictine College in the country.
