An arctic blast is bringing sub-freezing temperatures to Western Pennsylvania.
Over the next two to three days, the area will experience the coldest air it's seen in two years.
When temperatures fall in the single digits, experts say you need to prepare your home and car.
Lou Ickes from AAA says having a battery in good condition and up-to-date oil changes are important.
But what about filling up your gas tank so your fuel doesn't freeze?
"The gas is treated. All major manufacturers treat the gas it doesn't happen any more," Ickes said.
Steve Boehmer, from Boehmer Heating and Cooling, says a real cold snap can be too much for some furnaces.
"Furnaces just working so hard that maybe something that was getting close to failure will just be working too hard and fail," he explained.
Boehmer recommends changing your filter. Otherwise, your furnace has to work even harder. If you turn the thermostat down at night, he says to ease up on that during the extreme cold.
"That can cause the furnace to work extra hard in the morning, trying to come back up to temperature," he said.
We've all heard of letting a faucet drip if you have pipes that are likely to freeze, but there's another solution.
"We've been selling a lot of this pipe wrap and it's simply to put over top of water pipes inside your home or those that are adjacent to the wall," a Lowe's store clerk explained.
