Could Coal Be Key To Gasoline Woes?

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Some say coal could end up being liquid gold for drivers here in the U.S.

Part of the coal conference in Pittsburgh this week is focusing on how coal could solve the country's gasoline crisis.

And some scientists think coal to liquid (CTL) could really work.

"We could probably get up and running coal to liquids as transportation fuels within the next five or six years if we had a concerted effort on it," said Daniel Cicero of the National Energy Technology Lab.

China will start operating a major coal to liquid project in the next few months.

U.S. companies want the government to back them up in case the price of oil drops.

In all, it costs about $5 billion dollars to build a CTL plant.
