Fire Damages Mineral Plant In Butler County
CLINTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ―
Crews from across the area spent Saturday afternoon and evening battling a stubborn fire at a mineral plant in Butler County.
The fire started around 1:24 p.m. at the Excell Minerals plant in Clinton Township on Saxonburg Boulevard.
Officials say 20 fire companies were called in to battle the large, smoky blaze at the fertilizer manufacturing plant.
"When I arrived on scene, we had fire shooting through the middle of the structure and towards the front already," said Assistant Chief Chris Ballina, of the Saxonburg Fire Department. "No workers on scene, nobody in the building."
The heat was a problem for firefighters on scene and a bus was brought in where they were able to take a break and cool off as they fought to bring the fire under control.
The cause of the fire at the plant, which makes a fertilizer used on golf course, remains under investigation.
Ballina says the state police fire marshal will investigate the scene on Monday.
