Casino Workers Could Stop Construction Today
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Construction workers at the Majestic Star Casino site on the North Shore are telling Don Barden to "show them the money."
The contractors gave Barden until today to come up with millions of dollars or they've threatened to walk off the job.
However, so far construction work on the casino project is going on as usual and the workers are still working, even though this is the deadline for Barden to come up with $10 million to pay the general contractor Keating Building Corporation.
Individual workers have been paid, but the general contractor who pays them is out back payroll costs.
Barden is expected to have a meeting with subcontractors to address the issue.
So far, that meeting hasn't happened yet.
Dan Keating III, chairman of the general contracting firm, says if Barden doesn't come up with the money work at the site could either slow down or shut down.
At an event this morning, staff members were asked whether Mayor Luke Ravenstahl would have something to say the Barden situation.
They say the mayor will have no comment on the funding issue until after 5:00 p.m., which of course is the deadline for Barden to get additional funding in place.
Stay with KDKA for details from today's meeting.
