Lawrence County Man Dead After Canoeing Accident

TAYLOR TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― Family and friends are in mourning after a Lawrence County man was pronounced dead at a hospital Saturday night following a canoeing accident on the Shenango River.

Firefighters were called out to the river in Taylor Township near West Pittsburg for a rescue when officials say a canoe tipped over and two people fell in the water.

"The lady was holding onto a log - holding to, I suppose, her husband - and he was unconscious, we heard at the time," said Taylor Township Assistant Fire Chief Bill Anderson. "They got both of them… into the boat and they came on downstream to the power plant."

Family and friends say Greg Radisch was an experienced outdoorsman. Also, it's not unusual for people to go canoeing on the Shenango and Beaver Rivers. The activity is considered safe.

Freda Nelson says she was in the canoe with Radish when the incident happened.

She said two other friends were in another canoe nearby. They were able to make it to shore safely, but Nelson says she knew something was wrong when Radich suddenly got sick.

"He leaned forward or sideways, and then the canoe tipped," said Nelson. "I got to the right side of the tree, he got to the left. And he was just there. He did talk the last minute, and then he just died in my arms."

Friends and family say the 50-year-old Radich had some previous health problems.

"He passed away doing what he liked doing, you know, boating and fishing," said Ray Radich, Greg's brother.

The Lawrence County Coroner is expected to conduct and autopsy to determine the cause of death.
