Thousands 'Race For The Cure' At Schenley Park

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Thousands of people laced up their running shoes this morning in Schenley Park for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

This year marked the 17th year for the race for breast cancer awareness in Pittsburgh.

Every year, the race raises money for research, celebrates survivors and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

Today's activities included a Survivor Parade and Tribute, a Kid's Dash, a 5K run or walk and a One-Mile Fun Run.

"I've got five grandchildren now, I would have missed a couple of them if I hadn't been around, so it's been great," said 10-year breast cancer survivor, Loretta Elizabeth Martin. "I do some volunteer work for other cancer survivors. It's just so great to see all those woman there in their pink shirts, it's awesome."

As many as 35,000 people are estimated to have turned out for this morning's events.
