For most people the legend of Bigfoot is a joke, but two local men take it much more seriously.
They go out and investigate when people call and claim to have seen a Bigfoot and lately the phone's been ringing a lot.
Eric Altman is one of those men and he has plaster casts of what he believes are footprints.
He's the director of something called the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Society and they even have a Website.
For 13 years now he's been going out to investigate when someone calls up claiming to have seen, something suspicious.
"We try to go out and find evidence to prove there is something out there," Altman said.
Stan Gordon, who calls himself a paranormal researcher has a Website of his own.
Among other things, he's writing a book about a time in the early 1970's that people still talk about.
"There was unprecedented wave of Bigfoot sightings that occurred here in Western Pennsylvania," Gordon said.
Newspaper articles from 1973 and 1974 tell the stories with just the headlines.
From Latrobe, Bigfoot sightings persist and a warning not to use guns to hunt Bigfoot.
Greensburg worries mount over monster.
Is Bigfoot hiding in a mine in the North Hills?
From Uniontown, Bigfoot is worrying police. Officers concerned the Bigfoot myth could result in accidental shootings.
Despite the hype, no Bigfoot body has ever been found.
However, Gordon said he has plenty to research nowadays.
In fact, he got a call from a woman in Fayette County recently.
"I thought the police would think I was crazy because not too many people believe in Bigfoot. I thought they'd lock me away," she said.
She said she became a believer in September while on a road in Dunbar Township.
She claims she saw something for a few seconds as it ran into the woods and down a hill.
Altman came out to investigate, but says it was hard to find any evidence.
It turns out, hers is one of several cases he said he's been busy with in Fayette County lately.
"From July 10 to the end of September we had seven sighting reports turned into us from this area," Altman said.
Altman hosts a Bigfoot convention each year in Jeannette and says it's always packed with people.
Some are curious and some just want to enjoy the legend, while others dress up in Bigfoot costumes.
Altman and Gordon know that some people are going to roll their eyes, but they don't care.
They're enjoying the hunt.
