Police Continue Search For Baby's Birth Mother

Meanwhile, the woman who claims to have allegedly bought the infant is now behind bars

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― As investigators continue the search for the birth mother of a child, the woman who claims to have allegedly bought the baby is behind bars awaiting a psychiatric evaluation.

Officials say Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, is being charged with endangering the welfare of a minor.

According to police records, Curry-Demus called paramedics to Wilkinsburg on Thursday night claiming to have given birth.

She and the baby boy were soon taken to West Penn Hospital where officials say doctors ran tests and determined that the baby wasn't hers and that she had not given birth. That's when police were called in.

Authorities say Curry-Demus told police that she bought the baby for $1,000 from the birth mother, a woman who she called "Tina."

But this is not the first incident involving Curry-Demus and a young child.

In 1990, Curry-Demus was arrested and charged with abducting a 3-week-old baby from Children's Hospital and the day before that she allegedly assaulted a woman in an attempt to steal her infant. She pleaded guilty on that charge and was sentenced to 10 years of probation.

This morning, Curry-Demus was arraigned and is now being held on $10,000 bond. She has been ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation before she could possibly be released.

Meanwhile, the baby is said to be fine and the search continues for his birth mother.
