Driver Facing Charges In Pa. Turnpike Accident

BUTLER (KDKA) ― A deadly hit and run accident on the Pa. Turnpike early this morning remains under investigation by state police.

Authorities say 33-year-old Shiva Lal Acharya, of Chicago, is facing several charges including homicide by vehicle following the accident that killed a motorcyclist from Wisconsin.

According to investigators, it all started with a routine traffic stop in Ohio when a patrolman tried to pull Acharya over in Mahoning County for speeding.

"When the officer was attempting to pull him over, they weren't going extremely fast. He was behind him, thought maybe the guy needed some additional attention, he gets beside him, hits his horn to grab his attention and at that time he thought the guy saw him, he got back behind him," said Trooper Robin Mungo, with the Pa. State Police. "The guy never pulled over and at that time is when he punched it and increased his speed and was weaving in and out of traffic."

Officials say Acharya continued at high speeds and crossed the state line into Pa.

State police once again tried to pull him over in Pa., but they say he was going to fast to catch.

Investigators say Acharya hit and killed a motorcyclist. Then, he fled his car and was later found in a wooded area after an extensive search.

Officials say he was found with injuries to his head and leg.

Authorities have not yet identified the victim but say he was a 46-year-old man from Green Bay.

Meanwhile, Acharya is being treated at UPMC Passavant and is expected to be arraigned in Pittsburgh today.
