Youth Day Bound Catholics Face Flight Delay

MOON TWP. (KDKA) ― About 700 young Catholics from the Pittsburgh area are headed to Australia to celebrate World Youth Day with Pope Benedict XVI.

But about 500 of them experienced a speed bump - a 17-hour flight delay.

The flight for the young people and Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik was supposed to depart at 3 a.m. but a mechanical problem was discovered in the Northwest Airlines plane.

In spite of the delay, the group made the best of their situation.

All 500 of them celebrated a mass at the airline gate. They had lunch - some napped - and then the bishop and four priests heard confessions.

The kids had a talent show and even a volleyball game.

Bishop Zubik explained that the delay was actually a kind of blessing in disguise. It was an experience that strengthened the faith of those stuck at the gate.

The plane was fixed but the original crew had timed out and a new crew was needed to fly the aircraft.

The flight departed shortly after 8 p.m. for Australia.
