Mixed Precipitation Hits Pittsburgh Area

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Some mixed precipitation has moved into the Pittsburgh area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

It expires at 7 p.m. in the immediate Pittsburgh area.

Some streets, ramps and sidewalks are slippery at this time.

KDKA Meteorologist Dennis Bowman has come up with the following time-line:

  • 12-3 PM: Freezing rain/sleet
  • 3-7 PM: Rain, some freezing rain still possible.
  • 7 PM-10 AM: Rain, some heavy...temps rise slowly.
  • 10 AM-4 PM: Rain going over to snow...temps fall after mid-morning.

"A wintry mix of precipitation will overspread the area by late morning to mid-day," said Bowman.  "We can expect freezing rain, sleet and a little snow to mix in, making for hazardous walking and driving conditions into the afternoon.  Eventually, we will transition to all rain by late afternoon/early evening, as temperatures rise to the mid 30s. A prolonged period of freezing rain is likely in the mountains to our east, which may result in lines and limbs coming down."

Drivers should use caution especially during the afternoon and evening rush hours.
