Young Shooting Victim Remembered At Community Day
WILKINSBURG (KDKA) ―
As the investigation into the shooting death of a young boy in Wilkinsburg enters the second week, the community continues to cope with the tragic loss.
Many local residents were thinking of the 12-year-old victim, Kholen Germany, today during the Wilkinsburg Baseball Community Day at Turner Field.
"My kids go to school with the young boy. My oldest son, he's closer friends with him," said one parent. "I'm sure a lot of these kids have gone to school and know him, too."
The adults said the day is a positive event for all the local children.
"We have the kids out here; we're trying to do something positive. You hear a lot of negative about the community, but this is a positive thing," said David Reese, of the Wilkinsburg Baseball Association. "It's been going on for 59 years, we hope it goes on for another 59 years."
Earlier this week, police arrested Donald Wilson, 19, of Homewood, in connection with the April 18 shooting.
Officials say Wilson allegedly fired a gun toward a group of people on Wood Street. He is facing several charges including aggravated assault, though he has not been charged in Germany's death.
According to police, Germany was an innocent victim and not the intended target of the bullet that stuck him in the shoulder. He was shot while standing outside of the clothing store and died later at a local hospital.
