Wilkinsburg Police Serve Drug, Gun Warrants
WILKINSBURG (KDKA) ―
Wilkinsburg police are now stepping up patrols because of recent gun violence in the area.
Police say they are making arrests on both gun and drug violations in hopes of making the streets safer for everyone.
Last month, 12-year-old Kholen Germany was gunned down along Wood Street in Wilkinsburg. Police say Germany's death was a major wake up call to them.
"We've had some problems in the borough and we're trying to take back the streets," said Det. Charles Knox. "We've had some shootings. We're trying to get more narcotics arrests and gun arrests."
Officials say they had more than 20 officers out on the streets on Thursday.
"Yesterday, we started at approximately 6 o'clock in the morning," says Det. Knox. "We were able to arrest, before noon, approximately 14 people. In the afternoon we made a couple other drug arrests."
This morning, police say they stopped at six homes throughout the borough, but had no luck finding any of their suspects.
"We get the word out that we are looking for people," said Det. Knox. "Also the presence of the police officers from other agencies, just us coming out in our uniforms and our tactical gear, it makes a presence in the borough, and it does put an impact on the borough and it changes things for awhile."
Police say they are going to continue with these task forces in the coming weeks.
