Medical Examiner Removes Body From Apartment

The Medical Examiner says the woman's body was found in the bedroom of the apartment, but it's too early to tell if the woman gave birth.

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) ― The Allegheny County Medical Examiner has removed the body of a woman from an apartment belonging to a woman who falsely claimed she gave birth.

The bizarre story began to unfold when 38-year-old Andrea Curry-Demus showed up at the emergency room at West Penn Hospital with a newborn baby, claiming it was her son. The infant still had his umbilical cord attached.

Doctors determined she was not the baby's mother. Curry-Demus told police she had a miscarriage and arranged to pay a woman named "Tina" $1,000 for the baby.

Police charged Curry-Demus with endangering the welfare of a minor and placed her in the Allegheny County Jail. She was expected to undergo a mental evaluation.

Police began a search for the baby's birth mother. When they went to Wilkinsburg, Andrea's sister led investigators to an apartment in her sister's building, saying it belonged to her sister.

They searched it but found nothing. It was not the correct apartment.

Friday afternoon, detectives in Wilkinsburg searched the correct apartment which had a strong stench and discovered the body of a woman.

Police say the woman was found face down and her hands were bound with duct tape. While it's unclear exactly how long the body had been there, it was said to be in an advanced state of decomposition.

The Medical Examiner says the woman's body was found in the bedroom of the apartment, but it's too early to tell if the woman gave birth.

Meantime, friends and neighbors of Curry-Demus tell KDKA she appeared pregnant and even held a baby shower.
