Tape Shows Murder Suspect, Victim Talking At Jail

Police say Kia Johnson, 18, of McKeesport was last seen alive at the Allegheny County Jail

Surveillance video from the jail showed the suspect, Andrea Curry-Demus, talking with Johnson on Tuesday

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Investigators now believe a Wilkinsburg woman who's accused of killing a pregnant teenager to steal her unborn baby met the victim while both women were visiting inmates at the Allegheny County Jail.

Andrea Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg, is now charged with murder in the death of Kia Johnson, 18, of McKeesport.

Johnson was last seen alive at the Allegheny County Jail where she was reportedly visiting her boyfriend.

"We have information that they were there at the same time, visiting people at the Allegheny County Jail," Allegheny County Superintendent Charles Moffatt told reporters.

Surveillance video from the jail showed Curry-Demus talking with Johnson on Tuesday.

Just a day after Johnson disappeared, Curry-Demus showed up at a Pittsburgh hospital with a baby that she claimed was her own; but suspicious hospital workers contacted police.

After questioning, detectives say Curry-Demus admitted that the newborn was not her own – claiming that she bought the baby for $1,000.

Detectives found Johnson's body inside Curry-Demus' Wilkinsburg apartment on Friday.

According to investigators, Johnson's hands and feet had been bound with duct-tape and she had a wound to her abdomen consistent with the removal of a baby.

"A very sharp instrument" was used to cut open Johnson's belly, Moffatt added.

Curry-Demus is being held in the Allegheny County Jail facing charges including homicide, unlawful restraint and kidnapping.

The baby is reportedly in good condition.
