Construction Coming To Busy Road In Wexford

WEXFORD (KDKA) ― Construction is coming to a busy stretch of highway in Wexford.

It's happening on a section of Route 19 known as the Wexford Flats, from Route 910 to Pine Creek.

PennDOT says the project will make the road much safer and easier to navigate.

"The addition of a 13-ft. center turn lane so that adds 13-ft. and then again currently all the drain inlets are in the cartway or the travel way of the lane they are actually going to be offset," Dan Cessna, PennDOT District Executive, said.

Crews will also add sidewalks on both sides which will cause the roadway to expand from 43-ft. to 65-ft. wide.

Traffic in that area will be down to one lane in each direction for nearly two years.

Some businesses in the area worry how the work will affect them.

"We won't be able to back straight out of our garage without getting into the new sidewalks etcetera," Jim Yingling, of Yingling Repair, said.

"We're certainly having an impact through that business area," Cessna said. "We're purchasing quite a bit of right of way about 98 different parcels are affected throughout the corridor."

"I think it is a great thing, my concern is what is going to happen during the construction phase," Jean DeFilippis, of Popcorn-N-That, said.

According to her, the popcorn business depends on the last quarter of the year.

"And if construction occurs within that last quarter, I have no idea what that will do to my business, it could be devastating," she said.
