Westmoreland Co Residents Brace For Winter Weather

(KDKA) People across Westmoreland County are bracing for frigid weather.

At Bortz Hardware, employees have been selling ice melter and other winter weather supplies to people in the Greensburg area for more than 100 years.

Manager Heather Foster says the key is to get the right product for the temperature.

Typical rock salt only works to about 20 or 25 degrees. That's why Foster recommends potassium chloride, which works to zero degrees or calcium chloride, which works to minus 25 degrees.

She says once the ice melts be sure to clear the slush from your sidewalk or driveway.

For that, she recommends a newer model shovel with a bent handle and a metal strip across the bottom.
