Mosquito Tests Positive For West Nile In Greene Co

MORGAN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― There was a cloud over parts of Greene County as a result of the first mosquito to test positive for the West Nile Virus there in four years.

The fog was caused by a chemical called Permanone 3030. It's used to treat the area in Morgan Township where the West Nile mosquito problem first surfaced.

A thermal fogger burns the pesticide. The fog kills insects, not people, according to environmental protection officials but the folks who live nearby were asked to take precautions.

Lloyd Miller, who lives Reeseman's Trailer Park, covered his air conditioner and protected his plants but said it was worth it because he knows West Nile can cause sickness or worse.

The treatments were done in Morgan Township, Franklin Township and Waynesburg hoping to prevent West Nile illness in people over 50 and those with weakened immune systems. They are among those most at risk.
