Prosecutor: Wecht Used Workers For Own Enrichment

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― A federal prosecutor says pathologist Cyril Wecht used county employees, resources and equipment to "cut the overhead" of his private, multimillion-dollar pathology practice while he was Allegheny County coroner.

Assistant U.S. Attorney James Wilson delivered his closing arguments to the jurors at Wecht's trial in Pittsburgh this morning.

He said using county employees that way was a crime.

He said, "The public relies on officials of the government to act for the public interest, not their own enrichment."

Wecht was coroner from 1996 until he resigned under a grand jury indictment in January 2006.

He has made millions for his private investigations into deaths, including celebrated cases such as JonBenet Ramsey, Anna Nicole Smith's son Daniel and Laci Peterson.

He faces 41 counts.
