Versailles Boro Mayor Tries To Veto Police Vote

VERSAILLES BOROUGH (KDKA) ― The Versailles Borough mayor has been given the green light to try and bring back his police force.

Judge David Wecht handed down a court order stating that Mayor Emerson Fazekas now has the right to veto a vote that disbanded his town's police force.

The borough council had voted in January in favor of closing the police department because of budget problems.

The borough then approved a contract for police service from neighboring White Oak.

But now with this veto power, Fazekas says that could all change.

"It does what the people wanted for our police force to stay here," he explained. "There will be another vote and it would have to be 5-2 to override my veto and bring back our police department."

But first the mayor says they will have to wait and see if Judge Wecht's decision is appealed which will have to take place within the next 10 days.

In the meantime, the White Oak Police Department will continue to provide services for Versailles Borough.
