Community Bitter Over Closing Of Braddock Hospital
BRADDOCK (KDKA) ―
More than 100 people crowded a meeting to come up with ideas to save UPMC Braddock or find other options to fill the building.
Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato told the crowd he feels like UPMC burned him personally.
"Sometimes you live, you get burned by what you think [is] out there and then you adjust," he said. "Going forward, the landscape's different today."
Some people complained about the tax breaks given to UPMC.
"Don't ever come back with a handout for anything," one man said.
Onorato was urging quick action to either convince UPMC to stay or at least get their help in finding a new tenant.
"We're going to be asking them to be part of whatever the fix is for the building," he said. "Not just walk away but help us with the reuse, help us with the conversion, help be apart of it they are the owner."
No one from UPMC spoke at the meeting.
A "Save Our Hospital" rally is being planned for 2 p.m. Thursday outside Braddock Hospital.
