Turnpike Bridge Project Well Underway

HARMAR TWP. (KDKA) ― Pennsylvania Turnpike officials say plans to open a pair of bridges over the Allegheny River in Harmar Township are right on track.

The $200 million plan calls for two larger bridges to replace the current one, which is 60 years-old.

KDKA Traffic and Transportation Reporter Jim Lokay reports the old bridge is in good shape, but with the turnpike adding another lane each way, it's time for a change.

Right now a new span that will eventually carry eastbound traffic through the area is being built just downstream from the old one.

By late next year, crews will actually shift all traffic onto that new bridge as they complete work on westbound span.

The current bridge will be demolished to make way for that westbound span.

The entire project should be completed by sometime in 2010.
