Trail To Connect Communities Along Allegheny River

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―

It's a major initiative to create a 32-mile trail along the Allegheny River between Millvale and Harrison Township.

When it's all said and done, 17 municipalities and the city of Pittsburgh will be connected. Chief Executive Dan Onorato says the trail is all part of a continuous effort to sell Allegheny County.

"When we try to get companies to expand and relocate and want to be here, these are the types of amenities that they like to offer their employees," Onorato says.

The 2.7 miles of the O'Hara Township portion of the trail are complete, but it could be a while before all of the communities connect. The O'Hara Township portion of the trail begins in Squaw Valley Park along Fox Chapel Road. On a sunny day, you can't find a spot. Today a lone man with an umbrella walked the trail and if he completes it, he will end right at the Allegheny River.

But before the next connection, the Allegheny Valley Community Trail Initiative will formulate a plan for construction and fundraising. This could take a year. But money is already coming in. The most recent was a $25,000 check from the Saint Margaret Foundation.

Trish Klatt of the Fox Chapel District Association says these trails are a great place for families to be able to recreate in their own town without having to travel outside their community.

Just how much the 32-mile trail will cost is another factor that has to be determined.
