Regatta Continues Today With Powerboats, Fireworks
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
From picnics to parades and festivals to fireworks, the Fourth of July weekend has arrived and people across the area are celebrating.
The Three Rivers Regatta continues today in downtown Pittsburgh and on the North Shore.
There's plenty of food to choose from over at Point State Park and festival-goers can even watch other people eat during a competitive eating contest on the North Shore at 4 p.m.
Also, it wouldn't be a regatta without boats.
After some test runs on the Allegheny River on Friday afternoon, the powerboat races will start today and last all weekend long.
A jet ski stunt show is also being held today and Sunday will be the National Dragon Boat Championships.
But the big event will be held this evening, as fireworks are set to light up the Pittsburgh skyline again this year.
The company "Pyrotechnico" will launch 22,000 of them over the city.
The show begins at 9:30 p.m. and is expected to last about 30 minutes. But police are asking drivers to not stop on roads and bridges to watch.
The Regatta kicked off Friday at noon and later on thousands gathered to watch tightrope walker Nik Wallenda make the journey high over the Allegheny River.
There was little room for error as he made the walk around 7:00 p.m. on a cable that was only the size of about a nickel in diameter. Wallenda was suspended 150 feet above the water and balanced with a 50 pound pole.
His walk lasted about 25 minutes and was the longest of his career.
