Protesters Hold Tea Party In Oakland

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Fourth of July means fireworks, cookouts and fun, but today in Oakland the patriotic holiday harkened back to something the Founding Fathers did, protest.

The Tea Party Movement started when a cable televison business editor went on a rant over federal bank and auto bailouts, and since then, it has grown into a conservative call to action.

The protesters gathered on Flagstaff Hill to hear various Conservative speakers this morning.

"In a recession like we have now, the deepest since The Depression, the absolute wrong thing to do is raise taxes," said Glen Meakem, a venture capitalist.

Meakem, a Pittsburgh entrepreneur and radio talk show host emceed the event. He says the movement is based on a specific philosophy.

"We need government to leave us alone. That's what this is about, government to leave us alone," said Meakem.

The Tea Party in Pittsburgh was one of many held around the area and the country.

And attendee James Lattaker said that the government shouldn't regard them as a passing fad.

"We're under a very stealth attack, and it's time we as Americans stand up for what we believe in," he said.

Protesters say they expect to hold more tea parties as the midterm elections approach.
