Tased Man Dies, Family Demands Answers

SWISSVALE (KDKA) ― A local father wants answers after his son was tased by Swissvale Police and died.

"Step one is to find out how my son died," said Dennis Thomas, the father of the victim.

Andre Thomas, 37, the father of a two and a half year old daughter, was pronounced dead at UPMC Braddock after he was tased and subdued by Swissvale Police around midnight on Hawthorne Street.

Allegheny County Police investigators say a number of residents called police after Thomas was acting in an unusual manner.

"He was yelling, he refused to obey command, and made a movement toward the officers. They had to tase him," said Allegheny County Police Assistant Supt. James Morton.

But witnesses we spoke with say what happens after he was tased was unnecessary. One woman who declined to be identified said," After he was tased and handcuffed, one officer used a football-type kick and stomped him in the head."

Allegheny County Police will investigate the entire incident and so far the Medical Examiner has yet to determine cause and manner of death.
