Stink Bugs A Nuisance For Local Residents

JEFFERSON HILLS (KDKA) ― Stink bugs have been showing up at more and more local homes around the Pittsburgh area.

Carol Petrovich from Jefferson Hills knows more than she wants to about stink bugs. She had an invasion the other day.

It's this time of year when the bugs are looking for a warm home and they'll crawl into any crack or crevice to get inside. Carol experienced that last year.

Bill Todaro, an entomologist for Allegheny County, says the bugs have glands which produce the bad smell for a defense mechanism against their predators, like mice or birds.

But luckily for Carol, some birds do find them tasty. She witnessed an invasion of starlings which she says ate most of her stink bugs.

Todaro says you can try pesticides to get rid of them, but what may be most important is making sure you caulk or seal any little cracks so they don't get inside your home and then get trapped.
