Panel To Find Replacement For Buchanan

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan could soon be out of a job.

Senator Arlen Specter said today that he and fellow Senator Bob Casey are planning to start the interviewing process of applicants for the position.

Then, he says he expects to name a new U.S. Attorney soon afterward.

"Senator Casey and I have started a panel to take up the issue of a new United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania," said Sen. Specter.

While it's not the main reason behind her being replaced, Sen. Specter says Buchanan's prosecution of former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht demonstrated bad judgment.

"I saw a letter from former Governor Dick Thornburgh who was very critical of the United States Attorney for the press conference she held after the case was dismissed and her statement that Dr. Wecht was guilty. I think that comment was not appropriate," said Sen. Specter.

Sen. Specter says the panel will meet on July 17th.

We weren't able to reach Buchanan for comment.
