South Side Police Chase Suspect Wasn't Arraigned

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police are still searching for a man who led officers on a chase, crashed his car and then escaped from a local hospital after his arrest last night.

The chase started in West Homestead after a Munhall police officer spotted an assault rifle in the suspect's SUV.

As he fled from police, investigators say Otto Harris, 32, crashed into a utility pole while trying to turn onto Becks Run Road from East Carson Street on the South Side.

According to police, Harris jumped out of the car with the gun and tried to make a run for it; but police caught up with him – using a taser to subdue him.

Officers took the suspect to Mercy Hospital where he was being treated for an eye injury.

Around 9 p.m. Monday, though, Harris walked out of the hospital.

While Harris had been arrested, he wasn't arraigned yet so there were no officers there to guard him.

Police say they thought he was going to be admitted to the hospital and believed the hospital would notify them if he tried to check out.

That did not happen.

Harris, who was last seen wearing a hospital gown, is described as a black man, about 6' tall, 210 pounds with a lot of tattoos.

Anyone with information is urged to call police.
