Sources: Gunman Phoned Mother Prior To Shootings
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
As the investigation into the LA Fitness center mass shooting continues, sources now say the alleged gunman called his mother minutes before the shooting.
According to investigators, just prior to the shooting rampage in Collier Township, the suspect, George Sodini, made a cell phone call to his mother.
On Wednesday, police said that Sodini came to the LA Fitness center just before the shootings and used his swipe access card to the center at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday night.
Police said that Sodini then stepped out of the center, made a call on his cell phone and then re-entered the center and the shooting happened shortly afterwards.
During their press conference Wednesday, Allegheny County Police would not identify the person Sodini called, but sources close to the investigation tell KDKA-TV that Sodini did call his mother.
There is no information on the nature of the call or what was said and as of Wednesday police were trying to contact Sodini's mother to question her.
At the press conference, Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt spoke about the timeline of events.
"He went in first at 11 something in the morning. They don't have to check out, but they have to check in," said Moffatt. "Then, he went back in approximately 7:40. Then, he checks back in at 7:56. So we're thinking in between 7:40 and 7:56, he makes this call on his cell phone. We know it was made at 7:45 - so we're assuming he went outside to make that call. He went back in at 7:56. The police are dispatched at 8:15."
In his online diary, which came to light after the shootings, Sodini had harsh words about his mother, calling her "very dominant."
However, she is now reportedly the last person he spoke with before the shooting and his death.
