Prosecutor Calls Pa. Senator Reckless In Gun Trial

GREENSBURG (AP) ― A Westmoreland County prosecutor says a state senator was "reckless" in not trying harder to find his missing gun that a teen neighbor apparently used to shoot himself.

But state Sen. Robert Regola III's defense attorney has told the jury in opening statements of the senator's perjury and weapons trial that the case is not about the boy's death but rather the DA's efforts to "restrict guns."

Regola, a Republican, is charged with letting his then 16-year-old son possess the gun and failing to store it safely.

Prosecutors say that led to the death of his son's friend, 14-year-old Louis Farrell.

A coroner says Farrell shot himself with the gun in July 2006.
