Seneca Valley Strike Continues; Next Talks Monday

HARMONY (KDKA/AP) ― With their teachers still hitting the picket line, it looks like thousands of Butler County students won't be heading back to class this week.

Teacher and district negotiators for the Seneca Valley School District met yesterday; and although a state mediator says some progress was made, they're not ready to reach an agreement just yet.

Accoroding to the mediator, both sides made headway on some issues, but disagreement continues over the issue of pay and health care benefits.

Both sides are scheduled to meet again on Monday night.

Teachers went on strike Monday. It's the first time in more than two decades the district's 575 teachers have gone on strike.

The strike has canceled classes for nearly 7,600 students.

The major sticking point is salaries. The district is offering an average 4 percent per year annual increase for a 5-year deal, but the teachers want 6 percent.
