Body Kept In Hazelwood Funeral Home For 3 Months

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The body of an elderly woman was kept at a local funeral home for three months because the funeral director is in trouble with the state.

The Mark Sauvageot Funeral Home on Hazelwood Avenue has been struggling for some time.

Last Friday the Allegheny County Medical Examiner picked up a casket there containing the remains of an elderly woman who apparently had no family.

Funeral director Mark Sauvageot has a suspended license and should not be accepting any business according to the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association.

This funeral home was up for sheriff's sale last September, but the sale was postponed. Two bankruptcy filings were cancelled.

The Better Business Bureau has given Sauvageot an "F" rating - the lowest possible.

Three complaints have been filed against the funeral director because of refund, exchange, selling or service issues. Only one complaint was resolved.

No one would answer the door when a KDKA-TV crew knocked.  KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson's call was hung up on and someone shouted to get off the property.

Sauvageot also operates a pet mortuary in the same building.

We did receive a call from Mark Sauvageot's attorney.

He says that his client was the Executor of the elderly woman's estate and that they had been friends for some time.

The attorney contends that Sauvageot tried everything to get the woman buried but another funeral director who was going to handle the arrangements backed out.

The State Attorney's office would not confirm or deny that an investigation is underway or that charges are pending.

It is still unclear when the unidentified woman might be buried.
