Heidi Kozar, a knit designer at Knit One in Squirrel Hill, never thought what she started as hobby 46 years go would be seen on the silver screen.
"This very young woman came in and asked if they knew anyone in the store who could knit sweaters for the new Russell Crowe film being filmed in Pittsburgh," she said.
The only problem is they needed eight hooded knit sweaters in three weeks for Crowe's co-star Elizabeth Banks in his movie the "The Next Three Days" where he plays a husband whose wife is falsely accused of murder.
"I did have to design the garments too. It's was the same sweater so once I designed one I just kept knitting the same one over and over," Kozar said.
In one of the scenes, you see Crowe ripping the sleeve off of her sweater. Heidi says for the first time, she's okay with someone destroying one of her creations.
"They took five of them because they tear them apart so it's very exciting," she said. "It looks like he's ripping it apart. There was a lot of engineering to creating that ripping so I'm really anxious to see how they ended up doing it in the actual film."
And after years of putting up with all those knitting stereotypes, Heidi says this job made it all worth it.
"People hear you're a knitter and they go, 'Oh, you knit afghans?' and actually I'm pretty sure I've never knitted a afghan in my life," she said. "There's a long and illustrious history involved with knitting and it's nice to see it get its due. My sweaters will be on the big screen so that's a great thing!"
Kozar designs for quite a few magazines. Heidi also says she knitted the five hooded sweaters in two and a half weeks - the fastest she's ever knitted so far.
"The Next Three Days" will be released in 2011.
