Rte. 88 Construction To Cause Traffic Headache

SOUTH HILLS (KDKA) ― South Hills commuters may want to brace themsleves for some potentially big traffic backups.

Beginning next week, PennDOT will close the southbound lanes of Route 88 (Library Road) between McNeilly Road and Sixth Street/Killarney Drive from Castle Shannon into the city of Pittsburgh.

The lanes are set to close at 9am on Monday morning, May 5th.

The round-the-clock closures will continue through 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 10th.

The closure will allow crews to work around the clock to complete intersection realignment, overlay, drainage and other improvements on Route 88.

PennDOT's suggested detour is:

  • Turn right off Route 88 onto McNeilly Road
  • Follow McNeilly Road to Pioneer Avenue
  • Make left onto Pioneer Avenue, then left onto southbound Route 19 (West Liberty Avenue/Washington Road)
  • Turn left off Route 19 onto Connor Road (SR 3038)
  • Follow Connor Road back to Route 88
The work is part of a $4.3 million project to improve Route 88 including paving, intersection realignment, drainage, traffic signal and pavement markings.

The project will be completed in June 2008.

Northbound traffic along Route 88 will not be affected.
