PennDOT Begins Two Major Projects On Area Roads

ETNA (KDKA) ― Two major road projects got underway today and both have the potential to cause massive headaches throughout the summer.

The reconstruction of the northbound lanes of Route 28 over Etna - better known as the Etna Bypass - is now underway.

The lanes are closed and 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles a day are now being forced onto the detour route.

While at times there have been substantial backups on the detour route, overall traffic has been able to handle the change pretty well.

That said, PennDOT still expects there to be times of significant delays and they will be making adjustments to traffic signals and the hours police officers work the intersections to keep the traffic moving.

Meanwhile out on the Parkway West, the first "stimulus" project in Allegheny County started.

The reconstruction of the Steubenville Pike Parkway West Interchange is a major undertaking and a significant change for drivers who use those roads.

From now until the project wraps up in late October, the 22-30 bridge over the Parkway will remain reduced to a single lane in each direction.

That traffic pattern will mean significant delays for concert goers heading to the Post Gazette Pavilion this summer.

PennDOT says if you are going to the PG Pavilion add extra time and expect delays.

When the work on that interchange is finished the change will be dramatic.

The loop ramp from 22-30 to the Outbound Parkway West towards the airport, and the loop ramp from 22-30 to the Inbound Parkway West towards Pittsburgh will both be gone.

Instead access to those directions will be by way of two new traffic lights on Steubenville Pike.

PennDOT says this is needed to eliminate the close proximity of the entrance and exit ramps of the cloverleaf design and the resulting weaving that happens and the accidents that have marred the area for years.
