Major Route 28 Project Begins This Evening

ETNA (KDKA) ― A major reconstruction project is beginning this evening on Route 28.

PennDOT is replacing the deteriorating bridge that carries Route 28 traffic over the 62nd Street Bridge.

"It's a structurally deficient bridge that needs to be replaced. We're going to replace that with a brand new wider structure," Jim Struzzi, from PennDOT, said.

Because of the project, northbound traffic will be directed down the ramp leading to the 62nd Street Bridge.

Traffic will cross the bridge and turn left onto Butler Street.

From there, motorists will turn onto the Highland Park Bridge to get back on Route 28 north.

Officials say 20,000 to 25,000 cars use that stretch of road every day.

New traffic lines have been painted on the northbound side of Butler Street, creating a second lane of outbound traffic.

The work begins at 6 p.m. and continues through October.
