Rt. 28 Rock Blast Leaves Behind Chunk Of Hillside

HARMAR TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― The hillside above Route 28 underwent another blast this morning in Harmar Township.

It started just after 10 a.m. and brought traffic to a halt for a short time along Route 28 and Freeport Road as a precaution.

KDKA's John Shumway reports from Route 28 that crews say the blasting did not go exactly as planned - leaving behind a large chunk of earth on the hillside.

Officials say while the roadway is reopened right now, it could be closed again sometime today in order for crews to deal with what was left behind.

Last week, crews conducted two test blasts along the rockslide-prone area.

PennDOT is spending more than $8 million to stabilize the hill in hopes of preventing future landslides.

The work is scheduled to last through December.
