Route 28 Hillside Undergoes 2nd Test Blast

Officials say Route 28 has been reopened following a second test blast this morning on the rocky hillside above the roadway.

HARMAR TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― PennDOT has conducted another test blast today in the area prone to rockslides along Route 28 in Harmar Township.

Officials say the blast is part of the effort to try and stabilize the hillside.

Both directions of Route 28 were closed as a precaution near the Route 910 interchange while the blast was conduct. That started this morning at around 9:55 a.m., PennDOT says.

The blasting got underway at 10 a.m. Officials say the roadway has now been reopened to traffic.

On Monday, traffic delays lasted longer than expected for commuters when the first planned test blasts didn't go as planned and some of the loose rocks did not fall from the hillside as they should have.

Crews say they brought in other equipment in order to finish the job, which created the longer delays.
